SUS Format Integration Task Force
Maps Format summary recommendations
last revised 10/14/97

The Maps Format Integration Subgroup recommends that the following tags which had not been valid in the maps format in LUIS be added. Many of them pertain to serials and computer files, and will be necessary to display information related to those format aspects of cartographic resources. Also, some of the tags on this list are currently valid, but had not appeared on our previous list. Tags to be added to the list:

022, 074, 086, 240, 246, 247, 250, 255, 256, 310, 321, 342, 343, 362, 504, 514, 515, 516, 525, 534, 538, 547, 550, 551, 780, 785, 856.

The Maps Subgroup supports the suggestion to use the label ALTERNATE TITLES for the 246 field, with display constants. We prefer that 246 data display after 245 data.

The Maps Subgroup supports the suggestion to display 780/785 data after 362 data.

For 600/610/611/630/650/651/690/691 pairs having the labels Subjects, General (type s=) and Subjects, General (type sl=), we recommend eliminating the latter label to avoid confusion on the part of the public.

For 800/810/811/830 pairs having the labels Bibliographic series and Added bibliographic series, we recommend eliminating the latter label as not providing any additional meaningful information and using "Series". We also recommend displaying 490 fields with the label "Series note."

The Maps Subgroup would like the 086 field, which is the only place the SuDoc number is given when it is not used for classification, to display as a note with the label GOVDOC NO, and to become MHI searchable, perhaps as ng=.

The Maps Subgroup strongly recommends that programming be done to correctly display the degree symbol from the 255 field, as well as subscript and superscript characters. We realize that the proper display of characters is not related to format integration, but it is vital to making the records intelligible to the public.

The 856 field for hotlinks to electronic resources:

The Computer Files subgroup hunted for current display problems with the 856 links, and reported problems to FCLA as identified.

Recommendations for the 856 display are in LC's Guidelines for the Use of Field 856 (revised August 1997). Following is a proposed list of values for a newly defined second indicator and the display constants that could be generated for each:

2nd Indicator Relationship to source Display constant
# No information provided [none]
0 Electronic location of resource described Electronic resource:
1 Electronic location of online version of resource described Electronic version:
2 Related electronic resource; specify relationship in $3; or use $8 to link to 76X-78X linking entry field Related electronic resource:
8 No display constant generated [none]

We wouldn't clutter with display constants for any first indicator except 7 (which is the "method specified in $2").

Unfortunately, we cannot simulate the appearance of these display constants in LTTF.
