SUS Format Integration Task Force
Computer Files Format summary recommendations
last revised 10/20/97
The proposed recommendation uses 44 labels.

Most of the tags added to the Computer Files format have been borrowed from the Serials format:

  • 246 (with display constants) for ALTERNATE TITLE(S)
  • 77x (with display constants) for RELATED MATERIAL(S)
  • 780/785 as PUBLISHING HISTORY for serial title changes
  • 310/321 for FREQUENCY and FORMER FREQUENCY
Other NOTES 508, 518, 533, 534, 535, 540, 545, 550, 555, have been added.

Brief view: Currently, 9 fields are set to display in the Brief view of Computer Files records (author, title, edition, published, issued, description, series note, technical note, file characteristics). Some of these Brief views are quite lengthy -- usually not due to the number of fields displaying, but because many of the 538 TECHNICAL NOTE fields are very lengthy. To decrease the length of the Brief view screens, to eliminate redundancy on the Brief CF records, and to make the appearance of Brief CF records more similar to those in other fields, we propose eliminating the 538 from the Brief display.

Other changes in tags and labels are those altered in all formats. See "recommendations across all formats" for these changes.

The 856 field for hotlinks to electronic resources:

The Computer Files subgroup hunted for current display problems with the 856 links, and reported problems to FCLA as identified.

Recommendations for the 856 display are in LC's Guidelines for the Use of Field 856 (revised August 1997). Following is a proposed list of values for a newly defined second indicator and the display constants that could be generated for each:

2nd Indicator Relationship to source Display constant
# No information provided [none]
0 Electronic location of resource described Electronic resource:
1 Electronic location of online version of resource described Electronic version:
2 Related electronic resource; specify relationship in $3; or use $8 to link to 76X-78X linking entry field Related electronic resource:
8 No display constant generated [none]

We wouldn't clutter with display constants for any first indicator except 7 (which is the "method specified in $2").

Unfortunately, we cannot simulate the appearance of these display constants in LTTF.
