| Proposal for SUS Digital Library Collection Evaluation |
|
This is a proposal for an agenda item for the joint PSPC/ECC meeting in Gainesville I propose that the ECC Committee undertake a project to evaluate the core electronic resources that we have developed over the years. I suggest that we produce a document that reflects a shared vision for electronic information services as a key component of the SUS Digital Library. The final document would outline the scope, content, and rationale for a core collection of electronic information services that best support our collective programs. It could serve as a blueprint for the collections we have acquired in the past and will acquire in the future. In general, the evaluation would take into consideration SUS academic programs, correlating database acquisition to those programs. It would also include an analysis of use statistics for current databases. This evaluation can take place within the context of our collective curriculum and research agendas, so that we can ensure that we are building a balanced core collection of electronic information services that support the broadest needs of our programs. |

This evaluation would incorporate core electronic collections in three categories: Bibliographic databases Full text databases Electronic Journals Proposed process: Step One: Develop a matrix of degrees offered by program for each SUS institution. Step Two: Assign a "collecting level" for each of the databases acquired collectively. (e.g., levels A,B,C and D with A being support through doctoral/research level) Step Three: Identify desired collecting level for each major/program, based on information in matrix. (similar to conspectus levels for print collections) Step Four: Match each database to program area. Step Five: Collect, compile, and interpret statistical/use data on current databases, including anecdotal input from subject specialists. Step Six: Identify areas of potential duplication as well as areas that require support. |
