The Committee will serve as an instrument for medium and long range planning in the public services area for the SUS Library Directors. Recommendations will be conveyed to the Directors in the form of recommended goals and objectives, with timelines where possible. The Committee will consult with FCLA staff, the SUS Electronic Collections Committee, the SUS Technical Services Planning Committee and other committees as appropriate to obtain the information and assure the coordination necessary for fulfillment of its task. The Committee will articulate needs as well as recommend goals and objectives that will define, develop, and implement FCLA services that support public service programs in SUS libraries. Their immediate function is to advise SUS Library Directors and work with FCLA staff during the transition to a client/server and open systems environment. In pursuit of this mandate, the Committee will study and recommend goals and objectives for the operational service capabilities required by the SUS libraries in the public services area. The work of the Committee will relate to such areas as client/server basic functionality and public catalog access, including citation and full-text data bases; remote access by individuals; and the sharing of library materials and information among SUS libraries. It will also advise on major enhancements needed for the Library Management System to facilitate the study of public services operations. The Committee is also encouraged to explore services in other areas with the potential for improving information access in the libraries of the State University System.
In order to fulfill its responsibilities, the Committee should:
Survey SUS libraries on services and support needed by them but not now available in LUIS;
Target service areas where the needs of SUS libraries can continue to be met through improvement in shared systems;
Survey developments in automation on a national and international basis;
Recommend user interface options for an expanded LUIS, including full-text journal articles and other image databases utilizing Z39.50;
Organize seminars and provide other orientation to the SUS Library Directors in order to assure their effective participation in the planning process and, appropriate consideration of committee recommendations;
Draw on the expertise of FCLA staff to gain the benefit of their ongoing exploration within the areas embraced by the charge of this Committee; and
Promote a dialogue with and among the SUS Library Directors concerning options identified.
